Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district on September 20. The project entails an investment of around Rs 48,000 crore and is scheduled to be commissioned in phases beginning December 2030.
The plant will comprise four 800 MW units using ultra-supercritical technology. Adani Power said the project is expected to generate up to 20,000 jobs during construction and around 5,000 jobs once operational. The Chapar project forms part of the Adani Group’s Rs 63,000 crore planned investment in Assam’s power sector. This includes around Rs 15,000 crore for two pumped storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW through Adani Green Energy Limited. Adani Energy Solutions is also implementing smart metering projects in the state.
“Assam is fast emerging as the region’s energy hub, with several mega energy projects in the pipeline. The 3200 MW Chapar project is a proud outcome of the confidence generated by the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0. With an investment of nearly ₹48,000 crore, this project will constitute one of the largest single investments ever made in Assam. Besides providing massive employment opportunities, the State will also benefit through increased economic activity and SGST revenues, while local industries and enterprises will have opportunities to participate in the emerging ecosystem,” Sarma said. The project is also expected to create business opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, transport operators and service providers during its development and operation.
Adani Group Investments In Assam To Cross Rs 80,000 Cr
Across power, aviation and cement, the Adani Group said its investments in Assam will exceed Rs 80,000 crore, with projects expected to be implemented over the next three to four years. “Today marks the beginning of an important new chapter for Assam. Adani Power will invest ₹48,000 crore in this 3,200 MW thermal power project, bringing reliable and affordable electricity to support homes, businesses and industries. The project will also create jobs and open up opportunities for local contractors, suppliers and businesses. We are proud to invest in Assam and be part of the state’s economic growth,” Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Group, said.
Adani also referred to Assam’s geographical position, saying it could make the state a “battery” for India and support the country’s future growth. Once operational, the Chapar plant is intended to supply Assam’s household, commercial and industrial electricity requirements. Adani Power had emerged as the successful bidder for the 3,200 MW project through a competitive bidding process in October 2025 and received a Letter of Award from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in November 2025. The project is being developed under a Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate model, with fuel to be sourced through coal linkage arranged under the SHAKTI Policy.
The Group’s other investments in Assam include Terminal 2 at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, which became operational on February 22, 2026. Adani Power currently has thermal power assets across several states and is expanding its generation portfolio through new greenfield projects, including the 3,200 MW Chapar facility.
