Gujarat has emerged as India’s leading state for developing green hydrogen hubs, ranking first across both existing and potential resource assessments, according to a study by WRI India.
The state’s position is supported by a combination of renewable energy availability, transmission infrastructure, water resources, an established pipeline network and demand from heavy industries.
In WRI India’s resource assessment, renewable energy was given the highest weight at nearly 56 per cent, followed by water availability at 27 per cent and power transmission infrastructure at 17.1 per cent.
Gujarat Tops Resource Assessment
Gujarat ranked first under both existing and potential resource models, supported by operational solar and wind capacity, grid connectivity and access to surface and groundwater.
Rajasthan ranked second, driven by its renewable energy resources and transmission capacity. However, limited water availability emerged as a constraint on its green hydrogen hub potential.
Andhra Pradesh ranked third with a more balanced combination of renewable generation, grid connectivity and water resources. Maharashtra and Karnataka improved their positions when potential renewable generation was included in the assessment, with Maharashtra moving to fourth place overall.
Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh scored strongly on transmission infrastructure, with Uttar Pradesh leading in power transmission coverage. Their overall rankings were lower because of more limited renewable energy capacity and water-resource requirements.
India Targets 5 Million Tonnes Of Green Hydrogen By 2030
The National Green Hydrogen Mission has an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore and targets domestic green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes per annum by 2030.
Around 11.7 million metric tonnes per annum of capacity has been identified under the mission, while about 0.34 million metric tonnes is currently commissioned, representing roughly 2 per cent of the identified capacity.
