Electric motorcycle maker Ultraviolette Automotive plans to invest Rs 779 crore in a new manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, as it expands production capacity and prepares to enter the mass-market electric two-wheeler segment.
The new facility will initially have capacity to manufacture 2.5 lakh vehicles annually, with scope to double this to 5 lakh units as demand increases. It will complement Ultraviolette’s existing facility near Bengaluru, which has annual production capacity of up to 50,000 units. The investment is planned over the next five years and will be funded through internal reserves, equity and future cash flows, with limited reliance on debt.
Electric Two-Wheeler Demand Expands
Electric two-wheeler sales in India crossed 1.03 million units during the first eight months of 2026. Their share of overall two-wheeler sales also crossed 10 per cent for the first time in August.
Ultraviolette is currently known for premium electric motorcycles including the F77 and X47. The company is preparing to widen its addressable market with the Shockwave motorcycle, priced below Rs 2 lakh, and the Tesseract scooter, which is expected to cost below Rs 1.5 lakh.
“The demand we have for our products, including what is coming up next with the Tesseract and the Shockwave, is far more than the current facility can cater to,” Ultraviolette co-founder and CEO Narayan Subramaniam said. The company expects underlying domestic demand for its scooters to reach at least 10,000 units a month, potentially bringing it into closer competition with larger electric two-wheeler manufacturers including Ola Electric and Ather Energy.
Hosur To Support Manufacturing Expansion
Hosur was selected partly because of its proximity to Ultraviolette’s research and development centre in Bengaluru and access to the region’s automotive supply chain. The expansion comes as the company scales beyond its premium motorcycle business. Ultraviolette sold more than 3,000 electric motorcycles globally during the first half of 2026.
Exports to Europe and Latin America currently account for around 15 per cent of sales. The company expects their contribution to increase to about 25 per cent over the next five years.
